Homemade Tent and Nancy Drew

When Taterman sets his mind to do something, it's best if you just get out of his way! He built this tent all by himself and it stayed up for a week! I was pretty proud of him. Enjoy the pictures!

Our dog really enjoyed the cozy spot on the floor!

Reading Nancy Drew!

Fred thought it was cool, too.  Taterman was good to share his spot with his brother.

Really Good Advice

I read some really good advice today that I wanted to share with you. Sometimes you run across someones blog and they say the things you wish you could have said.  It's even better when they crack you up when they write it!  I love Mrs. G's style.  She says it like it is and I really appreciate it when people speak the truth. Here's the link:

Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Deadbeats By Mrs. G, Contributor to The Pioneer Woman

In other news...

We are currently trying to rid our house of mice. Again.  About this time every year we are infested.  I wish I could find the hole they use to get in and stop it up, but my dad told us it really doesn't matter what we do to try to keep them out.  He has seen them chew right through a 2x4.  If you have had success in keeping mice out of your house, please let me know!  Having mice in the house just gives me the heebie jeebies! (Did I spell that right?)

Also, we will be celebrating two birthdays on Halloween! My brother-in-law and my "Aunt-in-law" were both born on this most interesting of holiday's.  It has really been a blessing in disguise as we always celebrate birthdays instead of Halloween.  (get it? disguise...Halloween? Oh never mind)  My sister always makes stew inside a pumpkin for dinner, we have pumpkin desserts and dress up.  It's a lot of fun!

Well, another day is over and I posted an entry in this here blog.
Thanks for listening!

Another Attempt to Write

OK, here goes, I am going to try to post something at least 5 days a week.  I should have enough pictures hiding on my computer to come up with some interesting stories.  It is a struggle for me to schedule my day and there are SO many things I want to do!

This weekend we had a wonderful time visiting with my cousin.  It has been a long time since we visited. We got the old photo album out and reminisced.  Our families certainly did a lot of camping together!  I wish we had continued this tradition.  There were pictures of a ghost town we used to camp near. I remember how much we loved that spot.  Pictures of every birthday party.  Our mothers we so good about having a party for us every year.  Christmas was also documented every year and each present we opened was photographed.  Some really good pictures of our Grandmother and Great Grandmother who have both passed on.  It's so good to have had diligent photographers in the family.  It's a reminder to me to keep on shooting!

Also, this weekend, we enjoyed a wonderful harvest party put on by our church.  Tug-o-war, foot races, gunny-sack races, three legged races,  wheelbarrow races, strong man contests, lasso and whip contests, hay rides, horse back rides, hot Apple Cider, Candied Apples, food, food and more FOOD, wonderful fellowship, singing around a camp fire, and so much more! It was quite an event!  I was able to take some pictures but didn't plan ahead and my camera batteries died.  I know! *sigh*

I hope you all are having a memorable Autumn.

More Silly Conversations

Here are a couple funny things the kids have said this week.  I hope they entertain you!

We're all in the car and Taterman suddenly says, "Some farmer beans and a nice fiancé!"

That caused a lot of giggles and I had to ask, "Do you mean 'Some Fava beans and a nice Chianti?'" and almost in the same breath, "Where did you hear that?!?", thinking to myself the only place I think I have ever heard that is from a certain Anthony Hopkins movie and how in the world did my son hear it?
From the back I hear a chorus of "Garfield!". Evidently there is a scene in the 2nd movie where Garfield says that infamous line. Whew....

Today,I heard this little conversation during lunch ;)
Dad: Too much soup! You need to put some of that back, Fred.
Fred: I'm a gluten! I want to be a gluten!
Dad:  You mean you want to be a glutton?

Have a great weekend!

Road Trip and Cherry Limeades

We go on a business/family trip to Fruitland once a month.  Every other month, we add Marsing and Payette to the itinerary. It gives us a chance to get out of our hometown and see something new. It is a loooong drive. Our rear ends get tired of sitting, and our legs get cramped, but every time the trip comes up, we are all ready to go. We usually pack a lunch, grab some of the books we are reading for school, I pack my camera and tripod (cause you never know what you might see!) and Taterman brings his green piggy bank of mostly pennies so he can "buy us all something" and head out of town. We change the way we go sometimes but mainly we make a big loop out into the country, visiting Marsing first, and then use the freeway to return home. This time our trip took longer than usual because the driver was a little stressed and forgot his own plans, headed down the freeway and then said, "Oh, I was going to go to Marsing first!" We took a detour, kinda backtracked, and resumed our trip to Marsing.

Marsing is a little tiny town down by the snake river, they have a cool little picnic/fishin' spot right under the bridge as you go into town. Sometimes we stop there or we go a little ways further into town and visit the park to keep the kids happy. My husband drops us off while he goes and does his business (don't be getting any weird ideas! He inspects subdivisions) and then picks us up when he's done. Then its on the road again!

Did you know that we grow hops in Idaho?  The farms we pass along the way are the coolest thing I've ever seen! We had the pleasure of watching some workers harvest the hops on our last trip.  I took some pictures so I will try and post them next time.

Anyway, We pass by Homedale, then through Wilder the boring, dinky town. On the way to Parma is this awesome race horse farm! It is amazing! Huge mansion of a house, beautiful manicured paddocks and pastures. I want to live there so bad. It is the dream of my childhood. We pass this place and I crane my neck around so I can take in the whole breadth of this dream scape. Then on through Parma which is kind of a nice town. Somewhere between Parma and Fruitland there is this house right off the road with a sign that says "Guns for Sale". The house is kinda tucked back in the trees a little and though it's not a trailer, looks like it belongs in a old messed up trailer park.  I always wonder about that place and who in their right mind would venture in there to buy a gun. Hmmm.

By the time we reach Fruitland we have to stop for a potty break.  There is a gas station/A&W right as you get into Fruitland that we always stop at. Most of the time it's a quick-jump-out-and-go-potty stop. On our last trip, I noticed a poster in the window for a knew Limeade drink at A&W for a buck so I dug around in my purse and begged Emberlee and Taterman for money. Remember, Taterman brought his piggy bank (Yea!) and it was a good thing, too, because I needed to borrow 30 cents from him to cover the tax. And then the complaints start, "I was saving that money to buy something special for all of us!" He says.
"Well, we don't have to buy you a drink." I say while I'm dumping his money out in my palm, trying to see if he has anything other then pennies in his little green piggy bank.  Yeah, I'm a mean mom.
"Oh, all right, but you have to pay me back... a dollar." He says.

"I think he's going to grow up to be a banker" My husband says, with a chuckle.
"Or a loan shark!" I say with a laugh.

Anyway, We have to choose between lime, cherry, or strawberry flavored limeades. Weird. Aren't Limeades made from...Limes? We all choose cherry, except for Emberlee, who likes to be different.

It is customary for my kids to do the "Taste for a taste?" thing. Emberlee tries Fred's drink and say's "This tastes like cough syrup!" She was right they tasted a lot like cough syrup.  Carbonated cough syrup!  Ewww! But when your poor, you can't be picky and besides it wasn't too bad and it kinda grew on you!

As we are leaving the drive through, Taterman is exclaiming his appreciation for his drink and says, "I am starting to be glad I helped buy these drinks! It's the best cough syrup I've ever tasted!"

He looks like he's crying but I think the sun was getting in his eyes. Either that, or he was laughing so hard it brought tears to his eyes....

"Stop it!"

Ok, what is THAT! Never mind, I don't even want to know.

"Ewww... ok, that's enough."

"Mom, stop taking pictures and help me please!"

Visiting Payette is a story for another day.

Lessons in Canning Tomatoes

It is so important to pass down skills from one generation to the next. I hope this inspires you to spend time with your loved ones and learn something new.

We learned how to can tomatoes today with Grandma. I was supposed to be doing this in order to learn how to can but I spent the whole time taking pictures. However, I am sure that with my "photographic" memory, I should be able to remember everything. If I don't, I have some pretty smart kids that can teach me how to do it!

I have put together a little something in order to share our experience with you, Enjoy!

Until next time,

Honey, What should I write about? Or Beans, its what's for dinner!

I've been sitting here trying to come up with something interesting to write about and I keep thinking my life cannot be this boring, can it? I mean really, who wants to hear what we are doing in school everyday and what we ate for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (I made pinto beans, by the way), or how much fun I am having reminding the children to do their chores fifty. times. a. day? So I am sitting here, watching my husband play "Yacht" on Facebook and had the following conversation with my husband:

Me "Do you have any ideas for me to write about?"

Him "No."

Me "You don't have any ideas for me?"

Him "Nope."

Me "Well, I was thinking maybe I would write about things that make me laugh, or things that make you go Hmmm? (Reminds me of a song....)
I also thought I might write about Gimp but I just don't feel like writing a review right now. I'm not in the mood."

Him "Well, You could always write about 'Beans...are they really the magical fruit?'."

Until next time,
Gruvinmom

Now I need a title for this post. Uh, Honey, What do you think I should use for a title?

;)

OK, so I haven't written in a while....

Life is so busy. I have been catching up on the other blogs I follow and realized how long it has been since I have written anything on my own. My goal was to use this blog as a means to make a habit of writing on a regular basis. So far I am failing miserably.

I have decided to write a list of random things going on in my life in an attempt to get the ball rolling again. Here we go!

  1. School started and I purchased a new curriculum THIS week. How dumb is that!
  2. I have boxes of books all over the house that I cannot seem to get rid of.
  3. Yesterday, when my husband asked the kids if they would help him remember something, Taterman (my youngest son) said, "My brain isn't big enough too remember to remind people of things." Too funny!
  4. I planted my garden according to the "Square Foot Gardening" Technique, but did not finish setting up the trellises so now my squash is running over my other veggies.
  5. I think I have lost my yellow summer squash to a ugly "squash bug". :(
  6. My tomato plants are now taller than me! Is that normal?
  7. The Broccoli didn't produce anything edible.
  8. I have 3 beautiful pumpkins! One for each kid!
  9. I am going to go with my mom and sister to our regular hair appointment today. It is a girls day out! I love it!
  10. I have been re-learning the art of photography and I LOVE IT! I studied photography in high school but it never really "clicked" till now.
  11. My husband invited me and the kids along on a "business 'day' trip" this week so that I could take some pictures. He is so good to me. I completely wore him out because a 2 hour trip became a half day trip just so I could take photographs. He didn't complain. Not once.
  12. We have started to attend a "family integrated" church. Well, we started in May. I have NEVER in my life been in a room full of children from infant to teen and not hear them! I am amazed every Sunday!
  13. I haven't walked once this week and I am starting to feel like I might not return to it. That bothers me, a lot.
  14. My husband will attend the last Bible study meeting tonight, then they will take a break from studies while us women start ours. He has learned a lot and has been blessed by it.
  15. I love my husband so much!
  16. I love my kids so much!
  17. Now, I can't think of anything else to say besides all this mushy stuff about how much I love my family and how great they are so I will spare you from all that stuff and end this now.
Till next time,
Gruvinmom

Nicknames For My Kids and Husband

I need to come up with alias's for my kids. It is so difficult to write about them without having something to call them besides "the little boy" and "the older boy" and "my daughter" So here are some ideas.

Daughter nicknames:
  • Swee'pea- This is what we called her when she was born. Her Daddy looked a lot like Robin Williams in the movie "Popeye" and could even do the squinty eye thing. So naturally, the first born had to be known as "Swee'pea". Watch Robin Williams and Shelley Duval singing "Sailin"
  • Fred- I don't know why exactly, but my husband calls all the kids "Fred". My grandfathers name was Fred, so it's enduring to me, but I don't think that has anything to do with his naming them that.
  • Turkey Gizzard- Is also a name my husband uses for all the kids. I guess it's easier for him to have one name for all of them? What's that say about his memory?
  • Emberlee Lou- Aww, I like this one. This name is sweet just like my daughter. Maybe I shall pick this one for her.
Older Son Nicknames:
  • Spudnick- I think this originated from the potato names we have called our kids. Their names sort of rhyme with potato products. I know, we are weird. Then, just because the Russian satellite has the name "spud" in it, the nickname became "Spudnick"
  • Sparrow Spett- A name my son came up with on his own. He wanted us to call him this for a short time. I don't know where it came from.
  • Fred #2- you know why.
Youngest Son Nicknames:
  • GooGa- Don't ask me... My older son just started calling the younger one GooGa. Little one hates it and that's why it's fun to use, but.... I probably shouldn't use it.
  • Short Round- Daddy calls him this sometimes. He's short, He's round.
  • Fred #3- What can I say? It makes things easier.
My Husband's Nicknames:
  • Honey, Sweetie, Babe, and others- I think I have been calling him "Honey" on this blog. I might leave it that way but, hmmmm, let's see if I have others.
  • Popeye- I could do this but then I would have to change my name to Olive Oyl and I already have a name on this blog. Changing my name would be confusing and I would have to rename my blog to "Olive Oyl's at Home" or Olive's House". Besides, I look NOTHING like her. Maybe I could be known as "EVOO"? No, I don't think that's a good idea......
  • Honeybear: O.K. before we were married, my sister and brother-in-law helped me move to California. We had "walkie-talkies" to make communicating between the vehicles more convenient. So my brother in law decided it would be fun to come up with "handles" to use while we talked on the Walkie Talkies. Well, my husband had shared his nickname for me with them (he called me Sweet Cheeks and I am sure he meant the one's on my face!). My brother-in-law surprised me that he knew mine. So I had to tell them what I called my husband. I know it's corny. But that's my story, and yadda, yadda, yadda!
Well, I think I have one for my daughter now. But I'm still struggling with the others. I will have to keep thinking about this and let you know what I come up with.
